Praise is given at every opportunity, for example, for kindness, sharing, trying, succeeding, manners and many more. A positive approach is always used to encourage good behaviour through example and praise. Very young children showing unacceptable behaviour are distracted rather than confronted. Older children are unobtrusively removed from the situation with an explanation, quietly resettled and talked to calmly. On no account will a member of staff physically discipline, shout at a child, or single them out as a method of discipline. If any persistent discipline problems arise, we will discuss with the parents or carers an appropriate course of action, which is sympathetic with the nursery’s policy. When parents are in the nursery during their child’s nursery time, they may take control of any discipline needs if preferred, otherwise the staff on duty will carry out normal nursery procedures. Outside their child’s nursery hours, parents are responsible for their children whilst in the nursery.
We follow the guidance given in the leaflet ‘Child Protection: Guidelines for Day Carers’ issued by the Social Services Department. Please ask to see a copy for further information. If there is cause for concern with regard to any child the Duty Social Worker at the Social Services Local Office is contacted and the details recorded.
Within this policy we have two sections S.E.N (Special Educational Needs) and Equal Opportunities. Both policies together ensure that every child whom is registered at Orchard Day Nursery will be taken as an individual and will not be excluded or disadvantaged in any way throughout their care with us in relation to their ethnicity, culture, religion, home language, family background, special educational needs, disabilities, gender or their individual abilities. We consider the individuality and the uniqueness of each child to be special and important and it is our desire to accommodate and respond to these individual needs wherever possible. Children with special needs, like all other children, are admitted to the Nursery after consultation between their parents/guardians and the nursery. The nursery has guidance from the National Standards, Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, Local authorities and we also have our own S.E.N.C.O with up to date training within the Nursery setting: Juliette Lifford
Most importantly no one knows a child better than their main carer (Parent/guardian). Parental involvement holds the utmost importance and we together as a unit ensure that each individual child is offered relevant care with a well-balanced education through the foundation stage guidelines and the S.E.N code of practice. If it is felt that a child needs extra support within our Nursery, then we will liaise with parents to accommodate the extra help, training and outside support necessary.
We follow the guidance given in the leaflet: ‘Equal Opportunities’. Please ask to see a copy for further information. We are committed to supporting the development of a positive identity for all children by actively promoting equal opportunities. We strongly believe in individuality and encourage children to recognise this in others. Each Individual child is encouraged to interact in social situations and every opportunity is given within a wide range of experiences for them to develop in a warm, caring and valued environment, enabling each child to feel confident and successfully content in themselves and their actions.
We fully support the Ofsted guidelines which state that parents are the first educators of their children and that this should be reflected in the relationships with other carers in the nursery setting. We consider the relationships that staff and parents have to be a significant part of your care. We encourage parents to be fully involved in their child’s nursery care and support their involvement by having a number of written forms of communication (diaries, profiles, and newsletters). Staff are also always available to talk about any aspect of your child’s care and we would encourage you to do so. We hold regular events for parents to meet each other, talk informally to staff and share the nursery with their children.
A detailed policy is displayed on our notice board in the entrance hall. We have two qualified first-aiders, procedures for dealing with accidents, emergencies and fires, regular fire drills and constant awareness of health and safety issues. A high standard of hygiene is maintained at all times. We encourage the children in good hygiene practices when toileting, eating, brushing teeth, etc. We would also encourage you to raise any relevant issues as the health and safety of our children, staff and parents is our first priority. As allergic reactions to peanuts can be so severe, we will not be serving to children in the nursery any products with a high nut content, such as peanut butter. We ask that parents also do not allow their children into nursery with, for example, peanut butter sandwiches.
We consider the needs of potentially new children and those currently in our care equally when admitting new children. We run a waiting list for places and offer any available places in the following priority order:
We have a queries and complaints procedure in order to provide support to parents, children and the reputation of the nursery. A comments booklet for parents is also displayed in the entrance hall as well as daily communication sheets for all children aged between 2mths and 2yrs 12mths. If you wish to discuss any aspect of child’s care, please talk to a Supervisor at any time. Should you have any cause for concern and are in any way not satisfied with the supervisor’s response, please speak to Juliette Lifford (Manager/Owner) or Kerry French (Deputy Manager).
